Unit 4 - Exploring Types of Information

Practice Questions:

1. If I were wanting to look up information on vegetarian diets vs. meat-based diets, the best place to look would be a nutritional based scholarly text book. I think that most people would assume that their favorite magazines would have articles that would fit their needs, but magazines are always in the business to make money while scholarly journals are trying to get the best and most current information.

2. Having a topic that is general like censorship and applying it to something that everyday people encounter on a normal basis, like target, is best to be researched in magazine articles. Scholarly journals are not going to focus in on a store like target. This would make an interesting story that a large audience would enjoy, so this is something that could sell in a magazine.

3. As a college student myself, I would be interested in knowing what the difference in wages will look like when having a college degree as opposed to high school diploma, it would be best to look at a trade journal because this is a very job specific question. A trade journal will give you the information on that occupation rather than averages over the whole country for all jobs in general.

4. This is a question that is very much so related to what is happening currently, and would be a result of something in the news. A simple news article could give different opinions on this topic, and it would create an interesting story to talk about.

5. If I cared to look up information global warming affected by lack of sunspot activity, I would need to look it up in a current scholarly textbook. This is research that would have to be answered from scientific studies and would most likely appear in a textbook.

My Questions:

1. I wonder where the information and data is stored on the Internet. Is there an archive where all of the information is stored. I think there are a lot of parts to this question and I could find some unique things about it in a magazine, but to get clear answers to this question I will have to look up information from a scholarly book about computer technology or the Internet.

2. How safe is posting on blogs or social media when nothing can truly be deleted? This is a very common thing that i hear people talking about because there is fear of the growing industry of online activity. I think that in order to get the best opinions on this I would look at multiple magazine articles and cross reference their opinions with each others to see what is the common belief.

3. Is anything ever gone and taken down from the Internet, or will it always be accessible. I think that this is more of a tricky question to research, however it could probably be found in some sort of a police training which would be indicated in a trade journal. I am sure there is something that teaches detective to uncover very old things from the Internet.

  1. Hi, Brian:

You did a good job working through each question and determining which resources would include the best information to answer it. For your questions, you might need to consult technology trade publications, computer programmers and coders who create security do share their discoveries and discuss the best options. While there are always more the one resource that can help you with a question, it's a good idea to develop a research strategy and consider what you expect to find in each source.

    Cheers,
    Andrea
