Final Exam WOOHOOOOO!!!

Topic:
Does the expansion of ebook options impact how much people read?

Search Statement:
expan* AND ebook* AND read*

Deep Web Resource:
I used Academic Search Premier which is funded by EBSCOhost. It is a deep web database that is paid for by Clark Community College for its students to use. I input my boolean search statement (listed above) in the search box as is, and I got 141 results. I then shrunk my results by lookin solely at trade publications and got 65 results. The first listed article's abstract was discussed how in California there was an effort made to assemble a team that was required to investigate how to increase the amount of ebooks available so that there would be more of an oppurtunity for people to read.

Open Web Resource:
I used Goole as my free open web search engine. When I first input the same statement, most every result was a website that had ebooks or an ebook themselves. This is not what i wanted so I added "article" to the end of my statement. This also was not great but it did have some articles about ebooks.
Citation:
Swisher, Kara. "In Major Expansion, Kno Adds K-12 to Digital Education Platform (Video)." AllThingsD. Dow Jones and Company, 6 Aug. 2012. Web. 10 Dec. 2012.
Evaluation:
DWR:
Authority. There are multiple authors which is a good sign. They are both staff of the California State Universities Library.
Sources. The article is pulled from a Trade publication called Computers in Libraries.
Purpose. To inform not persuade so there is no bias
Eveness. It has no bias so is clearly facts and not opinion
Coverage. Provides details and charts/graphs to enhance the article.
Timliness. It is fairly current published in July of 2011
OWR
Authority. A single author whose credentials consist of works for The Wall Street Journal and producing All Things Digital, which is an anual conference about technology today.
Sources. It is an online article on allthingsd.com
Purpose. Inform about the growing use of technology in today's public school system.
Eveness. You can tell there is feelings and interest about this subject because there is only one author. She writes with a little excitement/passion and a litte bias.
Coverage. It is lengthy and goes into detail, but is still interesting to a reader.
Timliness. It is published August 6th of 2012, so is very current.
Article Review on the Open Web Article:
The author has clearly done her homework. She has shown that the use of ebooks and technology for students is very important. it is cost effective because the online textbooks cost about 9.99 instead of the overpriced books that need to be renewed every so and so years, which are currently being used.
There are companies such as Google and Apple who have switched up their system to help provide a system that is in complete support of education. It is a new and different time for electronic books and the market for other educational tools.
Not just ebooks but other parts of technology are bettering education because students can now save files and notes so easily and take them wherever they need to go, with the right supplies. The amount of ebooks available has dramatically expanded and students can easily have all of their books ready to be read on one small tablet.
All in all, the use of technology is growing and is so helpful to students in bettering their education.

Unit 10 - The Internet and the World Wide Web

Here is the link to my website.

http://twoplayfulotters.com/student/bdillon.html

Wow!!! that was pretty cool. In order to complete this, I located the file information of a similar website and copied it's same material. My web page looks the same as the example except all the words are different because i changed them. I didn't touch any off the formatting of the site like the font and color and size. After doing that, i saved the file information as a file on my computer just as if I were to make a word document. I wasn't able to use word for this because word has set standards and formatting things that would not line up to that of the other examples. Then i was able to open it up on a web browser, but only as a file because it was just on the computer I was using. Finally I used a website making program called Filezilla that aloud me to upload a file from my desktop and put it onto the open web for others to see.

Unit 9 - Evaluating Information

For my searches I used google and I looked up:

Information Literacy Kids

.COM:
"Children's Library." Childrens Library. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Nov. 2012. http://ascplcl.wordpress.com/.
This seems credible because it is updated on a weekly basis and is written from library employees and is backed by the library.

.GOV
"Technology, 8.1 Educational Technology, E. Research and Information Literacy." Technology, 8.1 Educational Technology, E. Research and Information Literacy. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Nov. 2012. http://www.nj.gov/education/cccs/standards/8/8-1-E.htm.
This website is the website for the New Jersey Government's Educational System. Its surely credible because it is a government site and it has all the laws and the standards for all of the new jersey state schools.

.EDU
"Standards." Information Literacy for K-16 Settings. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Nov. 2012. http://www.csulb.edu/~lfarmer/infolitwebstyle.htm.
This website seems to be very legit. It was updated yesterday and so I know that it is very current. It is the link to a lesson plan and key points of understanding information literacy for some sort of class at California State University.

.ORG
"About Reading Rockets." Reading Rockets. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Nov. 2012. http://www.readingrockets.org/about/.
This organization is a national multimedia literacy initiative offering information and resources on how young kids learn to read. it is clearly education based and has lots of resources. It is funded by a grant from the US department of Education.

Summary
I think that there is valuable information that you can get from looking at different level domains. If you wanted a quick answer about something wikipedia could answer I think .COM's are fine but if you want to find answers about some group specifically than it would be more proper to look at a .ORG web page. .EDU's are my favorite because most all have information that is aimed toward advancement of students, which will include researches done by other college level students along with much more. The most reliable and trustworthy seems to be a .GOV because it is backed by the government.

Unit 8 - Types of Information: Focus on Search engines and Web SItes

Search Tools:
Alta Vista
I chose to work with Alta Vista becasue I did not have any awareness about it, it was something that was new to me. It allows you to type your search statement with a boolean strategies. This search engine is an advanced searching database and allows you to search with keyword or date. It is powered and run through yahoo which gives it credibility. It gathers results based on the main topics of the search statement. It also uses automatic phrase detection if you forget to put something in quotes, it wouldn't matter.

Metasearch Tools:
Surfwax
This is a search engine that gathers its results from many other common web databases. It tries to interpret the meaning of what you want to say. I can type oba and it will assume that I am going to reference Obama because that is what is so commonly searched. Also, it would let me type ro+ry and would result in Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan because that is what is commonly searched when using those words, or in that case letters. It allows you to sort by relevance, alphabetical, or by source. It is a browser that is specifically looking at RSS sites and covers the last seven days searching through 140 different sites. After searching, you receive a description as well as what is know as "SiteSnaps" which provide the authors metatag and key related topics.

Subject Directory:
INFOMINE
The results in a subject directory like this are predetirmined. You are researching subject as opposed to statements. Scholars, librarians, and other professionals have handpicked results for each subject and that is where you are directed to. It pulls from many types of publications and resources including databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, listservs, online library card catalogs, articles, and directories of  researchers. It uses quotation marks to direct specific phrases, and it uses +/- symbols to indicate adding to or excluding from the subject.

Unit 7 - Types of Information: Focus on Periodicals

Search Statement:
storage AND (locat* OR place) AND internet AND (person* OR business) NOT (shop* OR purchas*)

Scholarly Journal:
Credibility:
There are many authors which show that it is something that scholars have wrote together all agreeing and confirming the ideas with each other. It isn't based on popular culture and there is no bias, it is strictly fact based. There are also many references to the authors affiliations.

Popular Magazine:
Value:
This article is pretty great for my search question because it directs a consumer to different places that they can store all of the history for their Internet usage. It gives the reader an understanding of what is involved in storing data so it is also informative.

Newspaper:
Value:
This article is about the growing world of technology. It is making statements about how to create a system for Internet storage that is larger in storage but more compact. It is informative about how to stay ahead in technology.

Summary:
The main takeaway from the last couple of weeks is that there is so much information out there, and when you have a specific topic, not all of that information applies. Boolean strategies help you sift through all of the big rocks and find the fine small things that really relate to your topic. However, there is still work to be done, you can't rely on the idea that your Boolean techniques will give you exactly what you want, but it is just more efficient and more productive.

Unit 5: Types of Information: Focus on Books

Cannell Book Catalog:

Search Terms: Internet and Privacy
Citation: Jasper, Maragret C. Privacy and the Internet: your expectations and rights under the law. Dobbs Ferry, NY : Oceana Publications, 2003.
Subject Headings:
Internet -- Law and Legislation -- United States -- Popular Works -- Privacy, Rights of.
This is a Circulating Book
Location and Call #: Cannell Second Floor KF1263.C65.J38 2003
One of the biggest reasons that this book looks credible is because it is from a series called "Oceana's legal almanac series. Law for the layperson."

Summit Book Catalog:

Search Terms: Internet and Privacy
Citation: Solove, Daniel J. The future pf reputation: gossip, rumor, and privacy on the Internet. New Haven : Yale University Press, 2007.
Subject Headings: Privacy, Right of. Internet -- Law and Legislation. Reputation (Law)
This is a Circulating Book
Location and Call #: Mt. Hood Community College on the Circulation Shelves K3264.C65 S65 2007
I take this as a credible source because it seems like a lot of it is about the law behind privacy and it goes into detail about the pitfalls of putting too much of yourself onto the Internet.

IT Pro:

This is a tricky database to use. The whole system does not look very user friendly, but I have noticed that it looks this way because there is so much opportunity to get into the very specific searches for you topic. I do really like the search withing part. It lets you prioritize what is important in your keyword searches. I have never seen this before in a search engine. I was also shocked to see so much detail in the description, it is basically directory to an online book. The whole book seems to be listed their with an extensive summary of each and every chapter. I researched Internet and Research under all content and the very first book seemed to be a good place to start. Overall I thought it was confusing at first but got to be very beneficial.

Google Books:

Search Terms: Internet and Privacy
Citations: Frackman, Andrew. Ray, Claudia. Martin, Rebecca. Internet and Online Privacy: A Legal and Business Guide. New York City, NY : ALM Publishing, 2002
What I think makes this credible is that so much of the book is here posted, so i can find references and i have a through outlook on the book because i can read it. This is different to most of the others because I don't have to assume if it is a good quality book.

Summary

This weeks tools are giving me an opportunity for trial and error. When I was on the first catalog, I had to try a few different times in order to get anything to appear. There is a fine line between the balance of too many search terms and too brief, but much of this is specific to the topic you want to look at. I did like looking at Cannell's because I know that what I find there is available to me, and is very close to me. Summit is still something that I won't choose to rely on as the others, because i think that they are pulling information from too many different areas, and when i am needing some research, I typically need it right then and not in 3-5 business days. IT Pro is my favorite because of the detail it allows. Google Books are great but because it is simply google and free to everyone I try not to use it.

Unit 4 - Exploring Types of Information

Practice Questions:

1. If I were wanting to look up information on vegetarian diets vs. meat-based diets, the best place to look would be a nutritional based scholarly text book. I think that most people would assume that their favorite magazines would have articles that would fit their needs, but magazines are always in the business to make money while scholarly journals are trying to get the best and most current information.

2. Having a topic that is general like censorship and applying it to something that everyday people encounter on a normal basis, like target, is best to be researched in magazine articles. Scholarly journals are not going to focus in on a store like target. This would make an interesting story that a large audience would enjoy, so this is something that could sell in a magazine.

3. As a college student myself, I would be interested in knowing what the difference in wages will look like when having a college degree as opposed to high school diploma, it would be best to look at a trade journal because this is a very job specific question. A trade journal will give you the information on that occupation rather than averages over the whole country for all jobs in general.

4. This is a question that is very much so related to what is happening currently, and would be a result of something in the news. A simple news article could give different opinions on this topic, and it would create an interesting story to talk about.

5. If I cared to look up information global warming affected by lack of sunspot activity, I would need to look it up in a current scholarly textbook. This is research that would have to be answered from scientific studies and would most likely appear in a textbook.

My Questions:

1. I wonder where the information and data is stored on the Internet. Is there an archive where all of the information is stored. I think there are a lot of parts to this question and I could find some unique things about it in a magazine, but to get clear answers to this question I will have to look up information from a scholarly book about computer technology or the Internet.

2. How safe is posting on blogs or social media when nothing can truly be deleted? This is a very common thing that i hear people talking about because there is fear of the growing industry of online activity. I think that in order to get the best opinions on this I would look at multiple magazine articles and cross reference their opinions with each others to see what is the common belief.

3. Is anything ever gone and taken down from the Internet, or will it always be accessible. I think that this is more of a tricky question to research, however it could probably be found in some sort of a police training which would be indicated in a trade journal. I am sure there is something that teaches detective to uncover very old things from the Internet.

Unit 3: Exploring Topics Continued

Tools:

Out of the Four basic topics to choose from, I chose internet. On GVRL and on Wikipedia I focused more on the loading and storing of information and data.

Keywords/Ideas:

Here is a list of the common keywords or idea that I think of when looking up "Internet" are:
Access
Services
Cite
Web
Connection
Protocol
Input
Speed
Appropriation
Explorer
Database
Social Media
Marketing
Commercial
Network
Advertisement
Search
Information
History
Relational
International
Education
Technology

Questions:

I really wonder where is information stored that businesses or personal data stored on the internet?

How safe is posting on blogs or social media when nothing can truly ever be deleted?

Is anything ever gone from the internet?

Is there a capacity that the internet can hold, or is it an infinitely growing space?

Is my blog post ever going to be deleted after I select "Publish"?

Unit 3: Exploring Topics

Summary:

I had never known about GVRL before, and it was a nice resource to use other than basic google strategies. I am a firm believer that if you need some basic starter information or you just need a definitionn of something, wikipedia is an amazing resource to use. However i do understand that it is not a very reliable and credible source for using information in an essay. Having GVRL at Clark is an easy way to find credited articles to use for my argumentative pieces, especially in my English classes. When I researched the basic topic "Movies", it is clear that wikipedia is more of a history lesson on the transformed movie culture over time, but on the Gale Virtual Reference Library, it gave me sub categories to look into many different subcategories of the overall theme.

Unit 2: Plagerism

1: This does not need to be corrected because it is an anecdote.

2: This is a quote from the Declaration of the United States and it does need to be quoted with a citation.

3: When using factual evidence you need to prove the source so yes it needs to be changed.

4: The statement has paraphrased a point from the excerpt and so by giving credit to King this is okay.

5: When changing words from a piece of writing, the proper way is bracket the words you switch. this could more properly be cited.

6: The writer has not properly shown from where the quote was taken from.

7: This is close but because it is a quote, it needs quotation marks to give her full credit.

8: There is no proof of why we are given this freedom without citing a source.

In this day in age, I have been taught a lot about the awareness of plagiarism, but the biggest point that I learned about it this week was that when i write an essay it is important to have work cited in the essay and in a bibliography. It is not an option of one or the other, it is both.
